Sankeien is a Japanese garden located in Yokohama's Honmoku. It was created in the early 1900s, over a period of 20 years, by Sankei Hara, a Yokohama businessman who made his fortune in the silk reeling and raw silk trade industries.
Inside the garden, which is approximately 175,000㎡ in size, there are 17 historical buildings, gathered from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura. They blend in seamlessly with the natural scenery of each season, and are the main attraction of the garden.
From Saturday 26th October, Sankeien will hold a chrysanthemum exhibition featuring approximately 500 chrysanthemums displayed in rows.
Visitors will be able to enjoy a huge variety of species and forms. There are large flowers over 20cm in diameter, flowers that have been cultivated in the bonsai style, and flowers from all over Japan, including Kyoto and Ise, that have been uniquely modified and passed down. The chrysanthemum exhibition will run until Sunday 24th November.
An indoor display featuring chrysanthemums is also one of the highlights of this Autumn.
Creations by Michiko Igarashi, a flower designer based in Yokohama City, will be on display in various parts of the former Yanohara family residence inside the grounds of Sankeien. Visitors will be able to enjoy a harmonious space created by the combination of the huge, old folk house and flowers. This display will be held from Saturday 9th - Sunday 24th November.
Please visit Sankeien to enjoy the flower that symbolises Autumn in Japan.
