Sankeien’s Moon Viewing Party

PSA Yokohama
2024/09/11

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

11th September 2024

This week's edition is on ‘Kangetsukai’ (Moon Viewing Party) at Sankeien.

Sankeien is a Japanese garden located in Yokohama's Honmoku.

It was created in the early 1900s, over a period of 20 years, by Sankei Hara, a businessman who made his fortune in the manufacturing and export of silk.

In the extensive grounds interspersed with 17 historical buildings gathered from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura, visitors can enjoy seeing how they blend in seamlessly with the natural scenery.

Sankeien extends its opening hours until 9pm for 5 days from Saturday 14th to Wednesday 18th September to hold Kangetsukai, a Japanese traditional event of moon viewing party, for the first time in 3 years.

It includes the evening with the harvest moon.

During this event, you can enjoy the view of illuminated old architectures while strolling through the garden.

At Rinshunkaku, an architecture built around 400 years ago during the Edo period,  you can enjoy different performances every evening of Japanese traditional music and dance such as gagaku, sokyoku, Satsuma biwa and shinobue, and saxophone and piano ensemble.

These performances can be enjoyed with just the admission fee.

On autumn evenings when the heat subsides, why not enjoy a moment away from your daily routine in this atmospheric space.
