Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
21st August 2024
This week’s edition is on the JICA Yokohama Japanese Overseas Migration Museum.
The JICA Yokohama Japanese Overseas Migration Museum is located on the second floor of the JICA Yokohama Center in Minatomirai. The museum mainly introduces the history of Japanese overseas migration to North America and Latin America, as well as Nikkei people (Japanese migrants and their descendants) and Nikkei communities. Admission is free, and audio guides are available in Japanese, English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
It is said that there are 5 million Nikkei people worldwide who are descendants of Japanese migrants. Japanese overseas migration has a history of over 150 years, and many Japanese traveled abroad from the port of Yokohama. What difficulties did the migrants who decided to live abroad overcome in unfamiliar lands? How did they build communities and play active roles in the countries they migrated to? Through photographs, video interviews, dioramas, and other exhibits, visitors can learn about the history and imagine the lives and thoughts of the migrants.
There are also various facilities within the JICA Yokohama Center: a gallery where visitors can enjoy coloring and objects of animals that live in Central and South America, such as capybaras and armadillos, and a library where you can read books in many languages. There is also the Port Terrace Cafe where you can enjoy international cuisine while looking out at the Port of Yokohama, making it a great place for a family outing.
