Children's Botanical Garden

PSA Yokohama
2020/08/12

The Children’s Botanical Garden, located in Mutsukawa, in Yokohama City’s Minami Ward, was opened in 1979 on the site of a research institute of Dr. Hitoshi Kihara, a plant geneticist famous for his research on wheat.

The aim is for children to come into contact with plants, to deepen their knowledge of them while getting close to nature, and to develop a caring heart to protect and nurture greenery.

The garden, which covers an area of about 3 hectares, features a wide variety of areas, such as those containing flower beds, rose gardens, wildflower gardens, and fruit gardens.

In the Children's Botanical Garden, you can see plants that change from season to season.

At this time of year, the apple tree that was the basis for Newton’s discovery of universal gravity is in full bloom. It was donated in 1988 by the Koishikawa Botanical Garden. The apple tree in Newton's birthplace died in 1814, but trees that were grafted from it before it died were distributed to various places.

You can also enjoy a variety of plants that bring colour to summer, such as crape myrtle, a flowering tree native to southern China, which is representative of summer.

The Children's Botanical Garden can be reached by bus from multiple stations.

From JR Hodogaya, Totsuka, Higashi-Totsuka, and Kannai stations, as well as from the east and west exits of JR Yokohama Station, you can either take a Kanagawa Chuo Kotsu Bus to the "Jido Yuenchi Iriguchi" stop and walk for 5 minutes, or a Yokohama Municipal Bus to the "Jido Yuenchi-mae" stop  and walk for one minute.

The garden is open from 9am-4:30pm.

It is closed every third Monday, and at year end and new year.

Entry is free.
