Yokohama Museum of Art Reopening Inaugural Exhibition

PSA Yokohama
2025/03/12

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

12th March 2025

This week's edition is on the Yokohama Museum of Art Reopening Inaugural Exhibition, ‘Welcome back, Yokohama’.

After undergoing major renovations, Yokohama Museum of Art, in the Minato Mirai 21 district, reopened fully on 8th February, with the opening of the ‘Welcome back, Yokohama’ exhibition to commemorate the museum’s return.

The exhibition delves into the history of Yokohama under the theme "diversity," looking back at the city's history from the Jomon period to the present day.

It is centered around the Yokohama Museum of Art’s collection, but also features pottery excavated in Yokohama as well as new artworks, to bring into focus the people - women, children, and people of various origins - who lived in the city before the opening of the port.

Another highlight is the large lineup of masterpieces from the Yokohama Museum of Art's collection, including works by Cézanne, Picasso, Magritte, and Yoshitomo Nara.

In the “Art As Kids See It” corner, adults and children can engage in conversation with each other as they take in the artworks together.

The title of the exhibition means, “Yokohama Museum of Art is back after a long absence” but the title also embodies the wish to extend a warm welcome to a diverse range of people, with the greeting, “okaeri” (welcome back).

The new Yokohama Museum of Art also offers more spaces to relax and unwind. The "Free Area" is free to use and features many sculptures and other works of art, as well as an art library, museum shop, and cafe.

The Yokohama Museum of Art Reopening Inaugural Exhibition, ‘Welcome back, Yokohama’ will be held until 2nd June.
