This week's edition is on measures against influenza.

Influenza is usually prevalent from December to March, with the number of cases peaking between January and February.

However, this year, influenza spread quickly in Australia in the Southern Hemisphere, so it is feared that it could start spreading earlier and on a larger scale in Japan too.

Symptoms typically affect the entire body and can include the sudden onset of a fever over 38℃, headaches, coughing, a sore throat, fatigue and aching joints.

[To prevent catching it]

Before meals, and after arriving home, you should wash your hands carefully with soap, for at least 20 seconds.

Maintain the appropriate humidity level in the room (50-60%).

Get enough sleep and eat balanced meals.

[To prevent infecting others]

When coughing or sneezing, wear a mask.

If you don't feel well, rest. Don’t overdo it.

If you have been diagnosed with influenza, you may still be contagious even after your temperature has gone down. You should take time off work or school for another 2-3 days from the day after your temperature goes down.

[To prevent exacerbation of symptoms]

If you have symptoms, you should get examined at a medical institution after consulting them by phone beforehand.

[About Vaccinations]

Influenza vaccinations are an effective way to prevent symptoms from becoming severe. Early vaccination is recommended, particularly for those at high risk of developing severe symptoms, such as the elderly.

The number of jabs required and the cost differ according to age.

Please consult your family doctor.

Measures against influenza are effective for preventing coronavirus infection too.

Please do your best to take measures against infection.
