Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
21st September 2022
This week's edition is on the special opening of a historic building at Sankeien.
Sankeien is a Japanese garden located in Yokohama's Honmoku.
Inside the extensive garden, there are 17 historical buildings, gathered from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura.
Visitors can enjoy seeing how they blend in seamlessly with the natural scenery of each season.
Among the buildings in Sankeien is Rinshunkaku.
Built in1649 during the Edo Period, it is an important cultural property that was carefully protected and handed down by Sankei Hara, the founder of Sankeien.
In order to preserve this precious building for many years to come, Rinshunkaku’s roof was replaced in a large-scale construction project - the first in about 30 years.
To commemorate the end of the renovation and the 100th anniversary of the completion of Sankeien, the inside of Rinshunkaku, which is normally closed to the public, will be opened up for viewing from Saturday 17th - Sunday 25th September.
In addition to the elaborate designs found in various parts of Rinshunkaku, such as Fusuma paintings by artists from the Edo Period and decorations using colored paper on which Waka poems are drawn, visitors can enjoy the view of the Japanese garden from inside the building.
All of this can be enjoyed with just the admission fee.
