Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
21st June 2023
This week's edition is on preventing heatstroke.
Heatstroke is common in July and August. Extra care should be taken during breaks in the rainy season, when temperatures can rise suddenly.
Let’s start by trying to follow these four pointers.
1. Drink fluids even if you do not feel thirsty.
2. Wear breathable clothing.
3. Keep rooms well ventilated and control the temperature using air conditioners etc.
4. Get used to doing moderate exercise and sweating in daily life.
As well as noticing changes in your physical condition each day, you should also keep in mind the following.
About half of all heatstroke patients are senior citizens aged 65 or older.
Older people are less able to sense that they are hot or lacking fluids, and their thermoregulatory functions do not perform as well. There are many cases of heatstroke indoors, so check the temperature and humidity of the room frequently and use air conditioning even if you don't feel hot.
Please also pay attention to the well-being of those who find it difficult to express that they are feeling unwell, such as young children and people with disabilities.
