Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

1st November 2023

This week's edition is on influenza.

This year, unlike in previous years, the influenza epidemic started at the end of August, and Yokohama City issued an epidemic advisory on 5th October. There is concern that the scale of the epidemic may increase over the winter.

Influenza typically affects the entire body and symptoms can include the sudden onset of a fever, headaches, coughing, a sore throat, fatigue and aching joints.

[To prevent catching it]

Before meals, and after arriving home, you should wash your hands carefully with soap.

Maintain the appropriate humidity level in the room (50-60%).

Get enough sleep and eat balanced meals.

[To prevent infecting others]

If you’re coughing or sneezing, wear a mask.

If you don't feel well, rest. Don’t overdo it.

If you have been diagnosed with influenza, you may still be contagious even after your temperature has gone down. You should take time off work or school for another 2-3 days from the day after your temperature goes down.

[Medical examinations]

Symptoms are more likely to become severe in children and the elderly, so if symptoms occur, consult a medical institution in advance and seek medical attention.  Please wear a mask when visiting the doctor.

[About Vaccinations]

Influenza vaccinations are an effective way to prevent symptoms from becoming severe. Early vaccination is recommended, particularly for those at high risk of developing severe symptoms, such as the elderly.

The number of jabs required and the cost differ according to age.

Please consult a medical institution.

Let’s take proper measures to prevent infection.
