PSA Yokohama
2023/07/19

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

19th July 2023

This week's edition is on “Kanrenkai” (lotus viewing) at Sankeien.

Sankeien is a Japanese garden located in Yokohama's Honmoku. It was created in the early 1900s, over a period of 20 years, by Sankei Hara, a businessman who made his fortune in the manufacturing and export of silk.

Inside the extensive garden, there are 17 historical buildings, gathered from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura. Visitors can enjoy seeing how they blend in seamlessly with the natural scenery.

Sankeien's founder, Hara Sankei, especially loved the lotus, as a flower of high virtue.

The lotus viewing, where visitors can admire the pink flowers blooming in a 1,700㎡ lotus pond, is being held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 21st July and 13th August. During this period, the garden will open from 7:00am to coincide with the lotus flowers, which start blooming early in the morning and close around midday. A “Teahouse Limited Breakfast Menu” will be available, as well as events such as “Lotus Tours”, where curators introduce lotus-related cultural heritage buildings, “Lotus Play” a hands-on event for children, and “Fan-making using Lotus Leaves.

For the first time, special yoga and meditation sessions will also be held for four days in the main hall of the Kyu-Tomyoji Temple, an important cultural property.

Enjoy some summer fun for children and adults alike, while getting in touch with nature at Sankeien, a garden that preserves traditional Japanese culture.

Advance reservation is required to participate in events.

For details, please see the Sankeien homepage.

Lotus viewing can be enjoyed for just the entrance fee.
